Jason Billinghurst, M.D.

Spine Surgery

Jason Billinghurst, M.D. is a fellowship trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon. Dr. Billinghurst treats disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, disc herniations, radiculopathy, myelopathy, spinal infections and spinal fractures.

Dr. Billinghurst specializes in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). He utilizes innovative techniques that result in less blood loss and post-operative pain, which allows for outpatient surgery, short hospital stays and faster recovery times. Whenever possible, Dr. Billinghurst performs motion preservation surgery, such as disc replacements, which may be associated with better long term outcomes, as compared to fusions. Dr. Billinghurst prides himself on giving his patients the best chance to regain function and mobility, and return to active, healthy lifestyles. When non-operative care is appropriate, Dr. Billinghurst works closely with other healthcare providers, including physical therapists, physiatrists, and pain management specialists.

Dr. Billinghurst was born and raised in New Jersey and graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers University with a Bachelors of Arts degree. He earned his medical degree from Cornell Medical College. While at Cornell, Dr. Billinghurst was involved in research projects at The Hospital for Special Surgery, the top ranked orthopaedic hospital in the country and at Erasmus University Medical Center’s biomechanics laboratory in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

After medical school Dr. Billinghurst completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at The University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. He then completed his fellowship in spine surgery at the prestigious San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders, where he gained extensive experience treating spinal deformities in both children and adults.

Dr. Billinghurst is a member of the North American Spine Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, and the Alpha Phi Omega national service organization. He has been invited to speak at numerous local and regional meetings, taught at surgeon educational programs, and provides consulting services to industry on the design and development of spinal surgical devices.
